Warning signs of periodontal disease can include: red, swollen gums, bleeding gums, persistent bad breath, tooth pain or sensitivity. The early stage of periodontal disease, gingivitis, can be reversed. If left untreated, the disease process can lead to tooth loss. Periodontal disease has been linked to other chronic illnesses such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes and preterm, low birth weight babies. Four of every five Americans suffer from some form of gum disease, according to the National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
